Unique Handmade Bottle Opener, made by Bhumi Sekitar, independent woodcrafter, using naturally fallen timber range (NFTR) in different parts of Malaysia, mainly in Penang and Johor.
Durian tree is an evergreen tropical tree with a straight trunk and buttressed base. A matured tree trunk can be 50-120 cm in diameter. It usually grows to a height of 30-40 m with some exceptional trees reaching a majestic height of 60 m. Durian wood is classified as softwood, coarse, lightweight and suitable for making light furniture , clogs and crafts. Its heartwood is pink-brown to deep, red-brown. Sapwood is lighter coloured and distinct in most species. The grain varies between species from straight to interlocked.
This piece is about dark reddish. It is sourced from an organic farm in Penang. There are 2 designs, one is Clear Bark and the other is Burnt Bark. With burnt parts, the opener has a part that contrasts greatly with the smooth finishing as well as the angular shape of the piece.
This piece should give you years of beautiful use. To prevent drying out and splitting, give this opener a polish and rub with orange oil or any good quality furniture/ wood oil every few months or when the lustre fades. Note that the burnt portions may dry out and snap off - in which case just oil the exposed wood to preserve the piece.

Mechanism :
Designed with a central pull up central screw and a magnet to capture the bottle cap.
Process:
- Raw timber cut to size.
- Bark is stripped off.
- Each one is then designed in sympathy with the wood.
- Rough shapes are cut in bandsaw.
- Fine shaping on a belt sander.
- Smooth fininishing on 600 grit sandpaper.
- Laser engraving.
- Polishing with mineral oil/ orange oil/ beeswax.
- Install screw and magnet.
