The nibong palm (scientific name Oncosperma tigilarium ), is from inland, lower salinity waters, near mangrove swamps of southern Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Nibung is the common name used in Indonesia due to its long thorns on the trunk. The nibong wood is hard and very lasting. It can withstand the saline conditions of the open sea. So tough, it is used as kelong stilts! When made into kitchen utensils, its original natural colour , deep black chocolate is maintained. No chemicals are added into it hence safe to use.
Kayu nibong tumbuh di paya bakau, di merata Asia Tenggara - Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Filipina. Ia adalah jenis yang kuat dan tahan lasak. Perkataan "nibung" berasal dari Indonesia, ia bermakna duri-duri yang didapati di atas batang pokok. Amat mengkagumkan ketahanan dan kekuatan kayu ini, ia digunakan untuk membina batang kelong! Ia juga memang sesuai untuk membuat peralatan dapur seperti senduk dan sidup. Tiada bahan kimia digunakan namun, warna hitam asli dikekalkan dan ia adalah selamat digunakan.
